WEEKLY NEWS FOR KNIGHTS AROUND THE WORLD

VOLUME 44 • NUMBER 20 • May 20, 2026

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Cristero War in Mexico. As Catholics in Mexico faced increasing persecution and even martyrdom at the hands of the government, the Knights of Columbus launched an international campaign to defend the rights of the Church. Pope Pius XI explicitly recognized the Order’s role in his encyclical Iniquis Afflictisque, published Nov. 18, 1926, in response to the persecution in Mexico: “First of all we mention the Knights of Columbus … made up of active and industrious members who, because of their practical lives and open profession of the Faith, as well as by their zeal in assisting the Church, have brought great honor upon themselves.” The memorial of the Mexican martyrs, observed May 21, includes six Knights of Columbus who were canonized by St. John Paul II in 2000.

When the Cristero War broke out in Mexico in 1926, the Knights of Columbus had already established an international network linking Mexican Catholics with one another and with brother Knights in the United States and beyond. In the face of sweeping persecution, the Order mobilized to defend the Church in Mexico, raising $1 million for a campaign to educate the public and assist those affected.

Faith of Our Brothers

By organizing pilgrimages to two national shrines and cultivating deeper devotion to the Cristero martyrs in Mexico and beyond, Knights today play a crucial role in preserving a legacy of faith strengthened by the blood of martyrs. “The martyrs’ witness should inspire and encourage us in the mission we have today,” said Supreme Director Jorge Estrada. “Let us not allow others to act while we remain mere spectators.”

A Question of Faith

During the 44th Supreme Convention in August 1926, the Order stood in solidarity with suffering Catholics in Mexico, organizing spiritual and financial support for the defense of religious liberty. Many Knights were killed during the persecution, among them nine saints and blesseds, including six priest-martyrs commemorated May 21.

Following Father Kapaun

Inspired as a young man by the story of Venerable Emil Kapaun, Father Wayne Schmid answered the call to both the priesthood and military chaplaincy. After decades of military service, he was assigned to minister in the Diocese of Wichita — the very diocese Father Kapaun once served. As chaplain of St. Mary’s Council 4458 in Derby, Kansas, Father Wayne has been a source of encouragement and guidance to fellow Knights, inspired by the examples of Father Kapaun and Blessed Michael McGivney.
