I have run away and like many during this time I was seeking a place to go and hide from all that is going on in the world! Thanks to Fr. Al for stepping up with his many gifts to celebrate the Eucharist with you this weekend.
Jesus probably experienced a great loss and deep sadness, when he learned that John the Baptist was beheaded. Most likely, anguish and torment flooded his mind as "he withdrew in a boat to a deserted place by himself." He wanted to be alone to pray and figure things out. When Jesus arrived at that place, he did not find the solitude he was looking for. He found a crowd of 5,000 waiting for him and they had many needs. Then Jesus "was moved with pity for them, and he cured their sick."
The strength of Jesus came from His daily prayer and a relationship with the Father. The same is true for us. These past months have not been easy! A pandemic, civil unrest and polarized politics have us looking for a cabin deep in the woods or a desert island, where we can get away from all this insanity.
As hard as it is, we must face these difficulties and need to understand that our daily prayer and quiet time are as important as the healthy living many of us have neglected in these Covid-19 times. The time we spend with God will give us the strength we need to face what lies ahead. Let us pray for patience, love, and understanding as we seek to not let fear do us in.
Jesus tells us: "there is no need for them to go away." We come to him in the Eucharist and give Him what we have. Just as He took the five loaves and the two fish, Jesus takes what we give Him and gives back to us His very self. The "deserted place" of quiet and prayer becomes our Communion with Christ and His love where truly, "the hand of the Lord feeds us..."
